This talk is part of the Yale Starlight Science Series.
Prof. CAO Hui, the John C. Malone Professor of Applied Physics and of Physics at Yale University, will shed light on how her research on optics will advance biomedical imaging and share the story of how her interest in "light" have shaped her academic career in physics. She will briefly compare studying physics at Yale vs. other top schools and discuss the role of scientists, universities, businesses, investors and governments in furthering scientific progress in her field.
The audience will hear about her research on "Seeing Through Opaque Media" and its application in imaging into biological tissues and the brain: Almost any object that we see around us is not transparent, e.g., paper, wall paint, cloud, fog. They look opaque not because light is absorbed but because light is scattered back. Optical scattering is the main obstacle for imaging deep into biological issues and brain. Recent experimental advances show it is possible to overcome light scattering, opening the possibility of seeing through opaque media.
This talk is aimed at high school, undergraduate and graduate students (and their families) who are interested in pursuing the study of sciences in the U.S. Investors in healthcare and medicine may also find this talk to be of interest. All are welcome.
The language of the event will be English, with simultaneous translation into Chinese.
